Generative AI like ChatGPT and Bard are opening up PPC automation possibilities. Try these few examples, but always check the result.
With the advent of widely available generative AI such as ChatGPT and Bard, there have been a whole host of other things that PPC account managers can now automate.
While most previous waves of automation helped with math in the form of bidding or pattern discovery in the form of targeting , the latest wave focuses on text generation that can help with ad writing .
However, generative AI can do much more than just suggest a few more headlines for responsive search ads (RSA), so here I'll share examples of how to use GPT to set up and optimize Google ads .
How to access generative artificial intelligence
The most discussed way to try out GPT is ChatGPT, which can be accessed at chat.openai.com .
But while this may be the fastest way to try out generative AI, you'll probably want a more scalable solution once you start using it to create and optimize PPC campaigns. That's where spreadsheet add-ons come in.
One of my favorites is a Chrome extension called GPT for Sheets and Docs.
After installing it, you can add GPT formulas to cells in Google Sheets by entering formulas in the form '=GPT(A2,B2)'.
So instead of working with a single formula at a time in the chat interface, you can run the same formula at scale across many cells. To use this add-on, you will need an API key , which you can get from openAI. Now we are ready to start using GPT to help us with our PPC work.
How to use ChatGPT for keyword research
While Google Keyword Planner is a great tool for finding new keywords, ChatGPT provides a good alternative. You can tell it which landing page you want keywords for and get a few suggestions. To make the keyword suggestions a little more relevant, you can ask ChatGPT to include a specific term in each one.
Once your ad groups are created and running, you may w peru mobile database ant to find other related keywords to target.
So instead of starting with the landing page URL, we'll ask ChatGPT to find keywords similar to the existing ones .
How to use GPT for keyword ranking
But what happens when the list of suggested keywords, whether from ChatGPT or another tool, is too long?
We all know that Google rewards relevance through higher quality scores . So, we should break down our keyword list into smaller, related groups.
It turns out that ChatGPT is quite good at grouping words by relevance.
How to use GPT to create ads
With a solid set of grouped keywords and an associated landing page from my website, all I need to do to set up my ad groups is set up headlines and descriptions for my RSA ads.
So I asked ChatGPT to help me write a few ads. A minor problem is that ChatGPT's ad title suggestions can go well over the required character limits. This shows a known limitation of ChatGPT : it's not good at counting, and the titles it suggested were usually too long.
ChatGPT is not good at math because it works by predicting what text will logically appear next in the sequence. It may know that "1+1=" is usually followed by "2", but it doesn't do the math to figure that out. It looks for common sequences.
This is a known issue and appears to be being addressed. In my latest experiments this week, ChatGPT now writes strings that are shorter and more likely to fit into the limited ad space Google provides for headlines:
