The concept of push notifications became popular after the Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) was launched, designed to send notifications to devices running iOS 3. Although Google implemented this technology a year earlier than Apple.

Push Notifications_for Apple

Apple has added the Push system to the iPhone and made it possible to use it for iOS and Safari.

Google has rolled out Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) (replacing Android Cloud to Device Messaging, which was rolled out in 2008). This service also enables push notifications to Chrome-based apps.

Microsoft, as always, strives to keep up with its competitors, and therefore created MPNS. This allowed sending push notifications to Windows Phone devices (version 7 and above).

There are three types of iOS push notifications:

The phone notifies the user that a message has arrived using a sound signal.

Audio/Banners. This type, in addition to the sound notification, assumes the appearance of a banner on the screen. You can view each message after lowering the "curtain", that is, in the Notification Center.

Badges (translated from English means “icon”, “symbol”) are notifications in the form of a number/corresponding image near the application icon.

Push Notifications_Windows

The Windows Push Notification service can send three types of messages:

Toast (translated from English as "toast"). After the message appears, it hangs at the top of the screen for 10 seconds. If the user wants, he can go to the application by clicking on the notification.

Tile (translated from English "tile"). These notifications are numbers on a tile that is superimposed on the app icon.

Raw (translated from English as "rough"). This type of "push" is necessary to transmit certain information within an application, most often a game.

There is no special system for displaying incoming push notifications for the Android operating system. Once received by the application, it is possible to display them in any form, as well as raw messages in Windiws Phone 8. After the data is received, the application displays them on the screen as a regular message in the "curtain" or as a banner, as in iOS.

Since Android is always responsive to all innovations and can adapt to any requirements, it is possible for Android devices to display push notifications in any form. For example, it is possible to open an application window with advertising content.
