One of the questions we ask ourselves every day is whether meta tags in SEO are still useful. The short answer is no, but it is actually highly recommended to generate these tags on our website.
Our intention in this post is to analyze the importance of meta tags in SEO, to calculate the weight they should have in your positioning strategy.
Why Meta Tags Have Lost Importance
Meta tags in SEO were born as markers that the user had to fill in. Therefore, the user was trusted to summarize the content of their website in a few words, something that was, a priori, very useful for both Google and other search engines. However, it began to be a very common practice to fill these tags with keywords that had little or nothing to do with the content of the text. This practice became popular because it positioned the site, and it did so very quickly.
Google's decision regarding meta tags
Faced with the flood of bad practices related to meta tags, rcs database decided to reduce their weight and establish evaluation methods in order to check whether these tags corresponded to the meaning of the text.
Why didn't Google do away with keyword tags or meta descriptions? On the one hand, they were still very useful for the search engine, and on the other hand, it was hoped that in the future this positioning parameter could be analysed more reliably.
New positioning tags
In addition to traditional SEO meta tags, new ones have been added that allow us to geolocate, indicate whether a page should be indexed or the size that a website should have in its responsive design.
Time has proven Google right, and today meta tags are still an important marker for Google… but with very little specific weight.
Meta tags in SEO today
Therefore, the importance for Google in relation to labels is still very low, due to the bad practices that have been related to this type of information. However, it is still useful for the search engine that the pages include meta descriptions, a list of keywords or instructions for its robots, therefore, it is advisable to complete all these fields.
As you know, SEO is successful if hundreds of parameters are worked on continuously. Meta tags are a small part, but if they are optimized correctly they will help us improve our positioning.
