Lake mode with Power BI Desktop
Among the new Power BI features for September, one of the most notable features is live editing of semantic models in Direct Lake mode. This innovative capability allows users to work directly with semantic models in Power BI Desktop, accessing data stored in OneLake and using the Power BI Analysis Services engine in a Fabric workbench, rather than on their local machine.
To start using this feature, you must first enable live editing from the preview options menu in Power BI Desktop. Then, select your semantic model in Direct Lake mode from the OneLake data center and choose the “Edit” option from the “Connect” button dropdown.
Live editing enables real-time changes to semantic models, resulting in a more efficient and seamless workflow. Each modification is applied directly to the model in the workspace, improving the data jordan telegram database modeling experience. Additionally, this feature offers the familiarity of Power BI Desktop and the ability to export to Power BI (PBIP) to support professional business development workflows.
Whether you need to create new measures, add calculation groups, establish relationships between tables, or run DAX queries, Direct Lake mode simplifies the process by allowing direct access to data from OneLake.
Q&A now supports semantic models with OLS
Users can now perform natural language queries on your semantic model using Q&A visuals. Previously, OLS-based models were unable to take advantage of this functionality. However, this limitation has been removed, allowing OLS-based semantic models to support Q&A.
