Moving beyond the participatory journalism model
Involving audiences in the co-construction of information is not new. The media have tried it since the early 2000s and the emergence of "web 2.0", through what is called "participatory journalism". However, this collaboration has proven to be complicated and has generated more resistance, disappointment and frustration than real added value. The integration of "amateurs" at the heart of the editorial process has come up against practices and organizations that had hardly been designed for this. Participatory projects have ended up declining or being confined to the periphery of the main editorial activity.

For the supporters of the membership model, the gambling data america principle of public participation must be revived by reinventing it. The report suggests extending it beyond the strictly editorial framework: it is instead necessary to consider a diverse range of participation methods, some of which can go beyond the production, dissemination, and promotion of information. Various media already do this: organizing events, visits, debates, etc. Be careful, however: these initiatives must make sense in relation to the project constructed by the media and not be simple marketing and commercial levers.

Propose non-elitist participation
One of the pitfalls of participatory journalism has been the development of a generally elitist model, with access restricted to an educated and expert public (for example, to keep a blog, you need a minimum of writing skills).
