How can consumption be controlled in the future?

The BNetzA can also determine what counts as a controllable consumption device in this context. The law only makes a suggestion in this regard, according to which this includes in particular private charging points for electric vehicles, heat pumps, systems for generating cold or storing electrical energy and night storage heaters.

In the future, grid-oriented control can be carried out in three different ways on the basis of Section 14a EnWG: through economic incentives, limitation of the grid connection capacity and direct control of individual consumption devices.

To provide an economic incentive, network operators and network customers can, for example, agree on a variable network fee depending on the time of day. When limiting the network connection capacity, a power limit can be set for a network connection, which the network customers must then adhere to independently. During the direct control of individual consumption devices, the network operator can specifically switch on individual systems in the sense of network-oriented use.

In the revised Section 14a, the EnWG points out that the BNetzA nepal consumer email list can additionally stipulate that the direct control of individual consumption facilities may only be used after the economic incentives have been unsuccessful.

Smart Meter Gateway as a central interface
In addition to the actual instruments for controlling consumption, Section 14a EnWG also contains a clear requirement for the use of the Smart Meter Gateway (SMGW). While the presence of an SMGW is not a prerequisite for the use of the control measures, the use of the SMGW for control is mandatory as soon as the measuring point has been equipped with an intelligent measuring system.

Conclusion
The new version of Section 14a reads like another big step towards production-oriented consumption. In concrete terms, the design of the instrument will now be important. Since the new version comes into force on January 1, 2023, it is expected that the BNetzA will begin drawing up an initial determination this year.

Section 14a can have far-reaching consequences for many players and bring real movement to the market. In addition to the fact that consumption devices must be made controllable (keyword: smart meter rollout), the network-oriented control of the network operators must be managed and monitored using software, and price signals must be transmitted flexibly and promptly to customers and markets.

Submetering is also likely to become increasingly important. Because when the grid connection capacity is limited, intelligent energy management behind the metering point is essential.

It is difficult to predict when we will really notice the change in our weekend routine and, for example, stop turning on the dishwasher, washing machine and robot vacuum cleaner at the same time. What seems certain, however, is that it is now only a question of when and no longer of if.

We are excited about the design of the BNetzA and look forward to implementing the upcoming requirements together with our customers!
