Farmers of Tambov region discussed the use of domestic seeds in the region

More than 150 representatives from all municipal districts of the region gathered at the site of the regional Government. The topic of the meeting was seeds of domestic selection among plant breeders.

Polina Bolotova, correspondent: “Agricultural producers are now faced with the task of avoiding dependence on imported seeds. Work in this direction is being actively carried out. Thus, last year, more than 49.5 thousand tons of domestically bred corn seeds were planted in the region. This year – more than 53 thousand tons.”

In general, domestic seeds are used most actively in grain crops. Over 90% of crops are Russian seeds. However, such positive dynamics are not observed in all crops.

Alyona Sytova, Minister of Agriculture of the Tambov Region: “Today, there is a special binance database interest in domestically bred sugar beet seeds. Since we are currently very dependent on imports. For example, only 2.5% of the sown areas in the Tambov Region are sown with domestically bred seeds.”

Only two companies supplied sugar beet seeds to the region from abroad. The regional leadership considers it unreasonable to hope for continued supplies in the same volume and suggests that farmers pay attention to compatriot breeders.

A representative of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture spoke at the meeting about the situation with seeds in the country as a whole.
